Top Northwoods Vacation Towns in Wisconsin

Tomahawk

Located in the heart of the Northwoods, Tomahawk has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts and vacationers for almost a century. Originally a hide-out for bootleggers during prohibition, the town is better known now for it's lakes, rivers, flowages, and trails. Lake Nokomis and Lake Alice offer some of the best recreation in the Northwoods. Fishing is abundant in the area for Walleye, Crappie, Perch, Bass, Northerns and Muskie. Paddlers can easily find quiet beaches and secluded coves, and boaters can dock up to countless lakeside restaurants and bars. Bicyclists can take the 26.5 mile Bear Skin State Trail from Tomahawk all the way to Minocqua.

Motor sports enthusiasts find themselves at home here too. There are miles and miles of both on-road and off-road ATV & UTV routes to explore. During winter time, snowmobilers have access to 400 miles of groomed trails within Tomahawk, where they also connect to over 900 miles of groomed trails in Oneida County. Every September over 25,000 Harley riders descend on Tomahawk for the annual Fall Ride

Minocqua

Another popular Northern WI Cabin Rental spot is the Minocqua lakes area, which also comprises of Woodruff and Arbor Vitae. Known as Nature’s Original Water Park, this area is home to 100's of lakes, streams, and rivers. Like most Northwoods vacation locations, the Minocqua chain of lakes is a boater's and fisherman's paradise. Cristal clear water and bountiful fishing await, tubers and paddlers can also find plenty of space to spread out and relax.

What separates Minocqua from a lot of other destinations is the amount of activities you can do when you are away from the lake. There's also many options to keep the kids entertained including a zip line course, go-carts, horseback riding, mini golf, water ski shows, and bowling. Traveling to and from Minocqua and Tomahawk is a simple 25 minute drive on HWY 51, which is why many travelers look to find lodging near either of these great vacation communities.
